چکیده

Open source software is becoming increasingly prominent and the economic structure of open source development is changing. In recent years, firms motivated by revenues from software services markets have become the primary contributors to open source development. In this paper we study the role of services in open source software development and explore the choice between open source and proprietary software. Specifically, our economic model jointly analyzes the investment and pricing decisions of the originators of software and of subsequent open source contributors. We find that if a contributor is efficient in software development, the originator should adopt an opensource strategy, allowing the contributor to offer higher total quality and capture the higher end of the market while the originator focuses on providing software services to lower end consumers. Conversely, if the contributor is not efficient in development, the originator should adopt a proprietary software development strategy, gaining revenue from software sales and squeezing the contributor out of the services market. In certain cases an increase in originator development efficiency can result in increased contributor profits. Finally, we find that, somewhat counter-intuitively, an increase in contributor development efficiency can reduce overall social welfare. ∗Rady School of Management, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093-0553. e-mail: [email protected] †Rady School of Management, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093-0553. e-mail: [email protected] ‡Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742. e-mail: [email protected]

Open Source, Dual Licensing and Software Competition

To distribute software, commercial firms have the opportunity to use some dual licensing strategy i.e. to provide their software under two different licensing terms (proprietary and open source). In this paper, we investigate the relevance and impacts of such distribution strategy in the presence of an already existing open source software. In this competitive setting, we determine in which con...

Patterns for Licensing Web Services

The trend towards providing software as a service has required us to rethink the way software is licensed. There are different types of proprietary and open source licenses for software. However, the nature of web services differs significantly from traditional software and software components, which prevents the direct adoption of their respective licenses. As web services can be accessed and ...

Software Licensing in the Cloud Age

Cloud computing represents a major shift in information systems architecture, combining both new deployment models and new business models. Rapid provisioning, elastic scaling, and metered usage are essential characteristics of cloud services, and they require cloud resources with these same characteristics. When cloud services depend on commercial software, the licenses for that software becom...
